Film Analysis of aspects of form in an opening sequence.
In this post i will give an analysis of the aspects of form in the opening sequence of Back to the Future. I will look at the following three questions in my analysis.
- What does the scene tell us about the narrative?
- What does mise-en-scene inform about the characters?
- How does the camera work, editing and sound support the story?
The opening scene gives emphasis of the aspect of time as it pans out and across over a collection of clocks as we get the title credits.
we then get a quick for shadowing moment when we see the old news paper clippings pinned on the board of the Brown mansion burning
after we pan over the empty bed we see a few photos of historic figure all well know for there contributions to science then we start to pan across and see a automated system that has been neglected for awhile. This gives us a better insight into the type of character that lives in the house.
We being to see the character as a very smart person if not a bit eccentric person. As the television turns on we are given another foreshadowing moment that gives us context to a later development.
the scene continues to pan across and we see more automated machines that have been neglected for a while.
After this pan we have well established a base assumption of the kind of person that lives in the house as we are then slowly introduced to a second character.
The shot changes at this point and we get a low close up of Marty feet as he traverses through the room. We get a few clues about the type of relationship these two characters share as Marty knows the location of the hidden key and calls out for the dog by name.
We then get a bunch of close ups of Marty interacting with various machines before we are given detail to these action through a shot of Marty standing in front of the speaker.
It is only after he blows the speaker showing his recklessness that Marty is finally revealed.
