Richard Williams
Provide an overview of the Persistence of Vision documentary watched in class and address the following:
What are your thoughts on Richard Williams level of perfectionism?
Do you feel it was fair to have his film taken from away him… why?
In your opinion, what could have been done differently during production to ensure the film was completed on time?
This documentary is based on the career of animator Richard Williams who spent years working on his masterpiece only to have it torn away as it reached completion.
In my opinion Richards level of perfectionism over his film The Thief and the Cobbler is understandable but on a professional level it is excessive. Richards desire to show his dream animation is something many animators could relate to. Yet Richards dream seemed to start to rule his better judgement. Richards passion for the film really hindered his ability to make professional decisions and instead focused on bringing his vision to reality.
The Documentary's cover of the process of the films creation shows a deep connection between Richards passion creating an inability or lack of foresight in the production planing of his film really lead to inevitable downfall of his film.
I do believe it is a tragedy that Richards film was taken away from him. Richard was an immensely gifted animator who was busy producing an animated master piece of film. Yet his passion ended up hindering his ability to finish the film. As an animator i do wish Richard could of finished his animation, Yet i do feel it that taking the film away from Richard was valid. Even though Animators and Directors are artist of the visual arts we work with in an industry that produces and funds this art form and we must adhere to the ridged guidelines of film production in order for us to be able to produce our creations. Richard chose to ignore basic production procedures and instead tried to create a film more as an art piece and less like a traditional animated film.
Richard could of easily finished this film if he had just produced a script and storyboards and stuck to the original idea.
